Social enterprise and their ecosystems in Europe (2019)

Project “Social enterprises and their ecosystems in Europe”, is a research project commissioned by the European Union Program for Employment and Social Innovation “EaSI” (2014-2020) to EURICSE and EMES that updates a study started earlier on social enterprises in European countries, having as results a synthesis report and national reports.

SEFORIS

The SEFORIS project is a multidisciplinary international research project on social enterprises, funded by the European Commission. SEFORIS aims to better understand the role that social enterprises play in the EU in the development and evolution towards more inclusive and innovative societies.

The EPP project (Strengthening emerging professional profiles in the third sector – a way to promote innovative bridges to work and social inclusion of disadvantaged groups) was a European comparative project within the scope of Erasmus + based on 10 case studies of social insertion companies for work (WISE) in Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Italy and the United Kingdom

Social Entrepreneurship in Portugal

The project “Social Entrepreneurship in Portugal: policies, organizations and practices of education / training” was a research project coordinated by Cristina Parente, a professor at the Institute of Sociology of the FLUP (ISFLUP) and intended to analyse the structures and dynamics of Portuguese social entrepreneurship.

A map of social enterprises and their eco-systems in Europe

The European Commission launched in 2013 an initiative that aimed mapping the activity of social enterprises and their ecosystems in 29 European countries (EU 28 and Switzerland) using an operational definition of social enterprise and a common research methodology.

Boosting Social Enterprise Development – Good Practice Compendium

In 2015, the OECD Secretariat launched an invitation through its website to national and international networks and the European Commission’s Specialist Group on Social Entrepreneurship to bring together policies, programs and initiatives that support social enterprises. One of the results of this challenge was a Compendium – Good Practice Compendium, which presents a rich set of initiatives aimed at boosting the development of social enterprises.

Study on Practices and Policies in the Social Enterprise Sector in Europe (2007)

European study, coordinated by Eva Heckl, at the Austrian Institute for SME Research and TSE Entre, Turku School of Economics, funded by the European Commission (DG Enterprise & Industry) on good practices and public policies with potential to promote the development of social enterprises.

The study was carried out in Portugal by the consultancy and research company Tecninvest.

Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project (CNP)

The Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project (CNP) aims to analyse the purpose, structure, financing, and role of the private non-profit sector in the countries to enrich our understanding of this sector and provide a more solid basis for public and private action in relation to it. This project works with teams of local researchers in 13 countries to produce the first systematic body of international comparative data on CSOs, philanthropy and volunteering. It currently operates in more than 45 countries, covering all continents of the world and most of its major religious and cultural traditions.

The Emergence of Social Enterprise in Europe (1996-1999)

Pioneering study on social enterprises, involving 15 countries, coordinated by Jacques Defourny, Center d’Economie Sociale, University of Liege, in a partnership between the EMES Network and CECOP (European Confederation of Workers’ Co-operatives, Social Co-operatives and Participative Enterprises), funded by the European Commission.

The study in Portugal was developed by Heloisa Perista (CESIS), who characterizes the CERCI (Cooperatives for the Rehabilitation of People with Disabilities) as examples of social enterprise in Portugal.
